Introduction To Sharpening
Sharpening for the Beauty, Barber, and Grooming Industries
This course will introduce you to concepts, terms, and equipment that are used to service beauty, barber, & grooming scissors and clipper blades. Course consists of 90+ lectures and includes printable student handouts and over 20 hours of video.
The topics presented in this online course are what we cover with our students during the first day of face-to-face training. It usually takes 8-10 hours to go over this material with our students. Think about that for a minute. People pay $700 plus hotel and travel expenses to learn this information. You can gain this knowledge for a fraction of that cost from the comfort of your own home and learn it at your own pace. That is a huge value at a significant savings.
Your Instructor
Jesse Hockett, NBTSG certified Master Sharpener - Shear Precision Sharpening
Jesse has been sharpening professionally since 2008. He decided to start sharpening scissors and clipper blades so Dawn didn’t have to buy new stuff all the time. He bought some sharpening equipment, talked to Dawn and friends who were groomers about their experiences with sharpeners and different kinds of tools, and practiced on their scissors and blades for almost a year before deciding to go “professional” and start offering sharpening services to the public.
Jesse served in the military for seventeen years before starting Shear Precision®. He is a decorated combat veteran who has spent more than six years overseas (without the family) in the Balkans, Southwest Asia, and Korea. Before entering active duty he worked as an Aircraft Development Mechanic and helped build the first seven C-17 aircraft for the Air Force (yes, ironically later in life he actually flew in the same aircraft he helped build). That’s where he first learned the difference between being just a mechanic or being a true craftsman.
Dawn Hockett, NBTSG certified Master Sharpener - Shear Precision Sharpening
Dawn inspired the creation of Shear Precision®. While working as a groomer she kept buying more and more tools until one day Jesse asked her why she needed so much stuff. She promptly replied, “There’s nobody around here who can sharpen them worth a darn! So unless you want to sharpen them for me I need more backup tools to use while I wait for them to be returned in the mail.” Dawn no longer works as a groomer, she now works full time in the business she inspired.
Before inspiring Shear Precision® Dawn worked as a groomer and before that she was a full time Army Wife and Domestic Engineer busy raising three kids, six dogs, four cats, and a husband. She also became quite adept at remodeling the house, fixing the cars, landscaping, and plumbing and appliance repairs while Jesse was off gallivanting around the world without her.
Training & Education
We believe in continuous improvement and attend sharpening trade shows, conventions, workshops, seminars, and training events whenever possible. We have learned from some of the most experienced and prestigious sharpeners and manufacturers in the industry. We are both proud members of the National Beauty Tool Sharpeners Guild (NBTSG) and Jesse has held numerous positions within the non-profit organization over the years. We have successfully grown our business from pick-up/delivery, to mobile on-site, to opening a brick and mortar storefront by servicing the beauty, barber, and grooming industries using a variety of equipment. We are manufacturer authorized/approved trainers for EZ-Vex, Hamaguri USA, Nebraska Blades, and Wolff Industries equipment.
